The common exception is a pre-arranged test
Roadworthy still matters
An MOT booking isn't permission to drive a dangerous car. Tyres, brakes, lights and other safety-critical items remain your responsibility.
Insurance does not replace an MOT. Having insurance does not make an expired MOT irrelevant. Some policy terms may also require the car to be kept in a roadworthy condition.
Check the date rather than relying on memory
It's easy to remember the month but not the exact expiry date. Use the official vehicle-check service if you're unsure.
Book early next time
An MOT can be carried out before the old certificate expires while preserving the anniversary date within the permitted window. That gives time to deal with repairs without an unnecessary gap.
