An insurer may need to establish the exact model, specification and value. Grey imports in particular may not match the versions listed in ordinary quotation databases.
Parts and repairs can affect underwriting
If parts are harder to source, or the car differs mechanically from the nearest UK model, repair costs can be less predictable. That can influence which insurers are willing to quote.
Tell the insurer it is an import
Don't choose the nearest UK model simply because it appears in a drop-down list. If the quotation system doesn't identify the car properly, contact the insurer or try a specialist provider.
Modifications still matter. Imported cars are sometimes altered after arrival in the UK. The fact that a vehicle is already unusual does not remove the need to declare later modifications.
Agreeing the vehicle details first helps
Before paying for a policy, make sure the registration, model, engine and import status shown on the documents are right. Correcting them after a claim isn't the time to discover that everybody had a different vehicle in mind.
