Do I need to tell my car insurer when I move house?

Moving house is one of those changes that is easy to forget in the middle of everything else. Your insurer will normally want the new address because where the car is kept forms part of the risk.

Household paperwork, keys and a car seen through an open doorway

A move can change the postcode, parking arrangements, annual mileage and where the car is normally kept overnight. Your insurer can tell you whether the premium changes.

Update the address accurately

If you split your time between two addresses, explain where the car is normally kept rather than choosing whichever postcode gives a better price.

Other records need updating too. A house move can also mean updating DVLA records for your driving licence and V5C. Those are separate from the insurance change.

Check commuting use

A new address may alter your journey to work or mean that you no longer commute by car. Update the policy only to reflect what you actually do.

Administration charges may apply

Some insurers charge for mid-term changes. Ask for the total effect of the address change, including any fee, so you know what is actually being altered.
